Recent news brings forward old fears of autism and vaccines, yet again.  This time though, the courts find against the vaccines.  Fear not though, because this case is quite rare, and not applicable to the general public.  For more details, updates and linkes regarding Autistic Spectrum Disorders and vaccines, read on...

A)  The case of Hannah Poling - A little girl who seemingly deteriorated right after getting vaccinations.  What makes this case unlike all but a tiny few other children, is her underlying mitochondrial disease.  I read about the case.  While reading I noticed that there is no direct link, but only assumption making the connection in this one child's sad case.  No matter how the case is examined, there is some degree of assumption.  So if the simple, minor stress of vaccination triggered her underlying disease, why wouldn't something else, like a nice case of influenza?  There is no specific property of vaccination proposed by this case, but only the postulated "stress" of vaccination triggered her underlying disease, making her case very rare, and even unique.  IMO, if she had not received vaccines she would have manifest her disease later under some other stress.  But none-the-less, mitochondrial disease is another topic to add to the increasingly complex mix that is the "root" of ASD.  Most behavioral and developmental specialists agree that autism is a complex of symptoms which vary in combination and severity.  Cause is difficult to pinpoint, but seems to be a mix of genetics and environment.  One thing is for sure; scientists and physicians continue to search for answers.  For an interesting transcript discussion regarding mitochondrial diseases and autism with leading experts of the field, click here
